Matchday Guide|Accrington (A)

6 April 2024

Crewe Alexandra will travel to the Wham Stadium looking to further their promotion ambitions against Accrington Stanley today (Saturday, 3pm).

Lee Bell’s men will be looking to bounce back from Monday’s disappointing defeat to Forest Green Rovers at Mornflake Stadium, and add to their already-impressive away record this term.

The Opposition

Accrington sit 18th in Sky Bet League, after a dip in form which began in the middle of February and ultimately cost long-serving boss John Coleman his job.

Stanley have lost six of their last eight games, but habve already hit the accepted 50-point 'safety' mark.

The Gaffer

John Doolan became boss of Accrington after taking over in late March. The former Accrington, Wigan Athletic and Barrow player had served as First Team Coach at Accringtonis still searching for his first victory as Stanley chief after two defeats.

Fighting Talk

Lee Bell: “We are in for a tough game, and we’ll have to be disciplined in everything we do. They play with a lot of freedom and energy, and they have good players.”

John Doolan: “They pass the ball well, they are in the Play-Offs for a reason, and they are good on the eye.”

Head-to-Head

The two sides have met 19 times with Accrington winning nine of the meetings and the Alex winning eight times.

In the reverse fixture, a last-minute goal from Elliot Nevitt rescued a point for the Alex, after a late comeback from Accrington.

Match Officials

Adam Herczeg is the referee for today’s clash. Christopher Ward and Danny Gratton will be his assistants, and Richard Wigglesworth will be the fourth official.

Herczeg has taken charge of 29 games so far this season and handed out 89 yellow cards and one red card.

Match Report | Accrington 0 Crewe 0

6 April 2024

  • Railwaymen take a point on road
  • Clean sheet for keeper Booth
  • Alex stay sixth in standings

Crewe Alexandra had to settle for a share of the spoils at Accrington Stanley.

Lee Bell’s side, missing 10 first-teamers through injuries, battled hard and deserved their point at Wham Stadium.

Chances were few and far between for both sides, as keeper Tom Booth registered a clean sheet.

The Railwaymen stay sixth in League Two after the weekend’s fixtures.

Manager Bell made three changes to the side that were beaten by Forest Green on Monday. Zac Williams, Lewis Leigh and Aaron Rowe were restored to the starting line-up, as Christopher Long, Charlie Kirk and Ed Turns missed out through injury.

Accrington, who dropped former Crewe man Kelvin Mellor to the bench, were grateful to keeper Radek Vitek who held a Williams shot from close range on 14 minutes.

On 28 minutes the ball dropped nicely for Tommy Leigh but his dipping volley was wide of the target.

Rowe tested Vitek with an angled strike, while Joe Gubbins headed over at the other end, as both sides battled to impose themselves.

Elliott Nevitt fizzed a strike just wide, and Vitek struggled to deal with a dangerous Rio Adebisi cross, but it remained 0-0 at the break.

The second half was a similar affair. Crewe were on top and looked the more likely side to win it but, in truth, never truly threatened to get the goal they craved.

On 77 minutes Ben Woods headed on target but it was comfortable for Booth, and shortly afterwards Josh Woods ballooned over from a good position.

Nevitt almost got to a wicked Adebisi cross as Crewe looked to pinch it, but the game ended goalless.
